Alphabuyer

I've shared a bit with you how we got majorly hit this summer with a broken air conditioner. This broken air conditioner, in turn, jacked up our PECO (energy) bill because it was running so inefficiently. Over the course of 2 to 3 weeks, Hubby and I would cringe when we went to the mailbox, for fear of getting another bill that would throw us over the edge. By the end of August, I was cursing energy, appliances, and any other general item that costs me a lot of money every month.

And then I was introduced to Alphabuyer.

Actually, they contacted me.  As soon as I saw their email, I went to their website, and I was immediately sold. I know it's bad to say that - as all I did was vaguely peruse what they were offering. But after the summer we had, Alphabuyer seemed like exactly what we needed.

The people behind this new company, based in Paoli, PA, kindly spent some time chatting with me a few weeks ago.  As "sold" as I was, I wanted to be completely sure I totally understood how Alphabuyer worked. I also wanted to see if there were strings attached.

Apparently, this is a totally stringless operation.

And I like that.

The guys from Alphabuyer were very nice and super accommodating.  They are a growing company, and I got the sense they really cared about getting people the best deals.  They did not speak to me like used car salesmen: they talked passionately about their company. They did not try to sell me on anything.  If anything, the whole "cheaper electric bills" thing did that for me.

So, I could use a lot of big terms, complicated algorithms or bore you with a lot of facts.  Instead, I'll put it in "Steph Terms" so that everyone can get on board. I'll call it A Money Saving Love Story:

Alphabuyer wants to people to get the best deals on utilities

(at this point, they work on deals for electric and gas in the tri-state area.  More monthly bills will hopefully be brought in the future).

Alphabuyer wants people to have an easy way to navigate the somewhat complicated process of searching for the best energy deals and switching their energy account to other providers

Alphabuyer, in all of it's wisdom, said, "Hey. Why don't we do it FOR the people?"

Alphabuyer did

Essentially, Alphabuyer spends their time and resources finding and negotiating the BEST energy deal in the area.  That means that they do not offer several.  They negotiate until they have the hands-down best price, and offer it to the people.

Alphabuyer works somewhat like a Grouponin that the deals (i.e.: energy prices) get lower with the more people that sign up.   The current deal running this month can save you up to $19 a month on your electric bill!  WHAT?!?

Alphabuyer also does all the messy paperwork and whatnot for you. All you have to do is "click to sign up," get them some of the necessary info to set up your account, and they DO IT FOR YOU. I love this. Mainly because one of the reasons I have not yet switched energy providers is that I was totally intimidated by the process. How do I find the right company? Is it the best deal?  Is it a headache of paperwork?

Nope. Alphabuyer takes care of it.

And, get this: the deal you sign up for today is locked in for 12 months.  An entire year.  No worrying about the cost suddenly skyrocketing or the rug being pulled out from under you.  And, as your year comes to a close, Alphabuyer will contact you to remind you that your deal will be ending, and will help you get the next deal that is up and coming.  Once again: they do the work for you!

And, unlike Groupon, Alphabuyer negotiates deals for utilities that are necessary (i.e.: everyone has an energy bill), not luxury.

Can you tell I am excited?

I will be signing up for this month's current electricity deal (available for residents in the tri-state area). And if you are anything like me (scared to turn lights on or run a fan on a warm day for fear of being overtaken by a ridiculous energy bill), I suggest you sign up too.  There is also a natural gas deal for NJ residents as well.

To see the current deal, click this link and type in
your zip code:

You can also peruse the site and learn more about this awesome company. The Alphabuyer website is really user-friendly and easy to use.

I will be signing up for the deal today.
Will you?

I'd love to hear your utility bill woes (let's commiserate together). And if you sign up, let me know.  I'd love to know what enticed you enough to get on the deal!

  1. That sounds awesome. I wish they had something like that in Iowa. I do appreciate that our energy company has a plan where they average your past 24 mos of usage, and that is what you pay every month. Then, at the end of the year, you're either ahead or behind, and you settle up with them once a year. It's been so helpful for budgeting, knowing that electricity is always $152 a month.

I know some people love April and September and other "low-energy" months because their bill is so cheap, but for me, paying the same price each month saves me the headache of a $400 surprise bill in December when it's -15 outside.

It sounds like with Alphabuyer you'll pay the same price each month for 12 months, which rocks! Yay Alphabuyer!

  3. I think they just work with alternative providers that are NOT PECO - to provide an overall lower rate. They don't have anything to do with government funded - so perhaps she would be better off staying with her program? Sara - they are not an alternative to PECO - they are just linking people to the best alternative provider deals - so they find the lowest price (right now PECO is roughly 11cents per kWh, and their deal is current a little over 8cents per kWh...
