Local Flavor Tuesday

In honor of several local franchise seasonal openings, I would like to dedicate this Local Flavor Tuesday to one of my favorite places to spend warm summer evenings (or frigid not-quite-spring-yet evenings):

Rita's started in the Philadelphia area over 2 decades ago.  Most people outside of Southeastern PA had no idea what "water ice" was, let alone the reputation of this "Rita." Now, there are Rita's all over the country!   A franchise came to West Chester when I was in high school, about 10 years ago.  My life has never been the same.

My world was opened to Gelati's, Misto Shakes, Cream Ices and the ever famous...Mango Water Ice.  My mouth is watering just naming them!  We'd walk down from Henderson High School once the last bell rang and stood in line for what seemed like hours, fighting for a spot among classmates, families and business people. They all, like us, came for the same thing:  RITA'S.

To this day, one of my most anticipated moments as Winter thaws into Spring is First Day of Spring ("FDOS") at Rita's, wherein all patrons receive a FREE water ice. The lines are no force to be reckoned with on FDOS at Rita's - you could wait up to an hour (AND I HAVE), but it's oh so worth it.  In my younger day, I'd loop the line as long as I could stand it to keep getting free ice.

Of COURSE I don't STILL do that....

Luckily I don't have to wait until the First Day of Spring for my inaugural taste of Rita's.  Many local stores are opening THIS WEEK, people.  If you are from the West Chester Area, see opening dates below:

West Chester Rita's (Gay Street) - Open 3/13

Downingtown Rita's (Lancaster Ave) - Open 3/6

Chadds Ford Rita's (Wilmington Pike) - Open 3/9

Frazer Rita's (Lancaster Pike) - Open 3/7

Phoenixville (Schuylkill Road) -  Open 3/7

For those who live slightly (or a LOT) farther away, go to the Find  A Rita's page and click on the closest location for opening information!

Now, go get you some RITA'S :)

What are some of your Local Flavor favorites, hot spots, happenings and hang outs in the Philadelphia (and surrounding) area?

  1. We checked into opening one of those. I like the idea of working half the year. Unfortunately, it's the half where Austin is out of school so we didnt do it. I bet they stay open all year in Dallas. I don't know though, I remember them being very firm about that half year concept.
