The folks over at Starfrit recently gave me a great opportunity to try out one of their awesome appliances:
The Apple Pro-Peeler
Now, I love to bake. LOVE. IT. I bake a few times a week, often for no particular reason other than that I enjoy it. One of my favorite ingredients to work with are Apples. Especially this time of year, I find that apples give the perfect Autumn touch to any meal or dessert. I have a pretty mean Apple Pie recipe, and my Apple Crisp is a blue ribbon contender.
While I love baking with apples, one thing sometimes hinders me: peeling them. Even before presented with the opportunity to try out the Apple Pro-Peeler, peeling apples was a deterrent to baking bliss. There have been moments where I am excited and motivated to bake, only to lament the dreaded process of hand peeling my apples, chopping them and quickly trying to get them into some water with lemon to slow down the browning process. While the finished product (read: Yummy Apple Pie) is totally worth it, I am exhausted by the thought of a messy kitchen, strewn with apple peels, and aching hands worn from desperately trying to peel a mountain of apples (not to mention the few and far between cuts from MISSING the apple with said hand peeler and getting my hand instead).
So, you can imagine my delight when Starfrit asked if I'd be interested in trying out one of their Apple Pro-Peelers.
My response?
Um...YES PLEASE!
The Pro-Peeler arrived in a cute little box. Unearthing it from the box, the Peeler was...well...cute. It's made of clear plastic, which makes watching the red gears churn as you peel the apples kind of cool. At first, I was wondering if this piece of plastic could really do the trick. I put together the crank, and suctioned the peeler to the counter (this feature, by the way, is my FAVORITE part. It just STICKS to the counter, so you don't have to worry about it flying off into an unsuspecting cabinet/window/child). There are sharp spokes to stick the apple on, which is graciously covered by a cap (so it's safe. Good thinking, Starfrit!). I uncapped the spokes, stuck the apple on and....turned the crank.
It was awesome! The peeler (which is on a moving arm) encircled the apple, peeling it as I turned the handle. After letting the peeler circle the apple twice, I had a perfectly peeled apple, ready for chopping and baking! As a bonus, the Apple Pro-Peeler comes with a Corer Slicer as well.
I can't say enough good things about this piece of equipment. As the holidays approach, I can assure it will get plenty of use as I make pies, cookies, quick breads and crisps. It also doesn't hurt that I have a 15-month old who LOVES APPLES. It's easy to pop on an apple while my little Chica watches and waits, as opposed to fumbling with a peeler and knife (can we say yikes?)

First let me ask what time you get up in the morning that you have your blog up so early? I became a fan of starfrit on facebook. I was looking at their website and I'm thinking about getting a few of those spoontulas with the quick fix so I leave it in the pot when I cook.
